As Red Cross Volunteers, Motorola Solutions employees checked and installed smoke alarms in residences in the Lauderdale Manor & Kendall Green neighborhoods with the assistance of the Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue.  Residents in these areas have expressed an interest and need for these potentially lifesaving devices. Volunteers also encouraged residents to develop and practice fire drills at home.

“The Red Cross is incredibly grateful for the support of corporate partners like Motorola Solutions,” said Carlos J. Castillo, Disaster Program Officer for the South Florida Region of the American Red Cross. “We feel privileged that Motorola Solutions and their employees put their compassion into action,” said Castillo.

“As a company, we are dedicated to supporting the local communities in which we live and work,” said

Matt Blakely, director, Motorola Solutions Foundation. “We’ve supported the American Red Cross in Florida since 2007, and this fire safety campaign is another important effort to support the prevention of home fires.”

This local campaign is part of the American Red Cross’s effort to reduce the number of fire deaths in the United States by 25 percent in five years.  Every year, approximately 365,500 home fires are reported in the United States, causing an estimated $7 billion in property damage and 2,500 deaths nationwide. Nearly two-thirds of all fire deaths happen in homes that have no smoke alarms or that have malfunctioning units, and only one out of every three American families have created and practiced a fire escape plan.

The Red Cross responds to nearly 70,000 disasters each year in the United States and the vast majority of those are home fires.
