Hurricane Irene: Video Update
Although Hurricane Irene has fizzled out, the storm left a path of destruction, flooding, wind damage and widespread power outages. And here at the American Red Cross, we’re still putting the full force of our operations behind our response, meeting all of the immediate needs of those impacted.
We have relief operations in more than a dozen coastal states, and thousands of our trained disaster workers are helping those affected. On Sunday night we had 300 shelters open, hosting 8,000 people. Since Friday, the Red Cross has provided more than 48,000 overnight shelter stays. And across the East Coast, we are working with our community partners to provide hot meals to communities without power.
