At the scene and behind-the-scenes

You’ll often hear our volunteers talk about the ways they help on the frontlines of disaster response – going to the scene of a house fire, hurricane or other emergency situation – but many Red Cross volunteers also contribute behind the scenes too. Heidi Condon is one of our many volunteers who donate their time to both areas of our organization.

Many times, the Red Cross events you hear about and attend have been planned by volunteer committees…groups of volunteers who give of their time and talent to create awesome events for our communities.

These events not only help us raise the funds needed to carry out our mission, they also keep us connected to the people we serve. Heidi is currently busy planning the American Red Cross Bed Race, an event so unique that you’d probably have to travel to Key West to find the nearest one.

We wish we could give you the inside scoop on all of the cool details about the event, but we’d rather you just come and see for yourself. (Solution B: become a volunteer and join the committee…we’re always accepting applications!)

We can tell you that it will be Saturday, April 30 at Digital Domain Park from 2 p.m. – 5 p.m. Attendance is free, and the first 100 people through the gates will also receive free tickets to the St. Lucie Mets game and Fireworks Extravaganza that evening. The teams competing will be raising support for the Red Cross, and donations will be accepted at the event as well.

Heidi and her fellow volunteers have been doing an amazing job making sure everything is in place for the event. We’re glad we could spotlight all of the ways Heidi contributes to the American Red Cross as we continue to celebrate National Volunteer Appreciation Week.
