As the calendar flips to March 1, the long-standing recognition of “March as Red Cross Month” begins once more. It was 68 years ago that President Franklin D. Roosevelt first proclaimed the month in honor of the American Red Cross, and ever since then we’ve kept up the annual tradition by asking people to join us in our vital humanitarian mission.
When you join the Red Cross – whether through volunteering your time, making a donation, or taking a safety class – you join an organization with a history of hope. Since 1881, when Clara Barton first launched the American Red Cross, volunteers have been rushing to the scenes of emergencies and disasters in order to provide aid and assistance in the most critical moments.
Beyond disaster relief efforts, the Red Cross also works hard assisting members of the military, teaching lifesaving skills, and nationally serving as one of the largest blood supplies in the United States. And since 1917, the American Red Cross Palm Beaches-Treasure Coast Region has served the local communities through disaster response, health and safety classes, youth programs, international tracing, community events, support of the Armed Forces, and volunteer training.
Just ask any of our 3,900-plus local volunteers, and they’ll tell you how imperative they are to our mission. We make it our priority to help people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies, but we can’t do that without your help first.
You – volunteers, donors, learners – enable us to empower people to perform extraordinary acts in the face of emergencies. This March, we’re hoping you’ll celebrate with us the amazing work we have all achieved…and we’re hoping you’ll join us as we keep working hard for our communities, the county, and the world.
